Template for POPs in air and aerosols

This format should be used for submitting all relevant persistent organic pollutants (POPs) measured in gas phase and/or in aerosols.

Points to note:

  • Include information on filter and absorbent setup under meta data “medium”
  • Include information on how sample is treated in the lab under “sample preparation “. Use special setup with information on combination of Soxhlet+Hexane+13C+Silica -
  • Include information if been part of any relevant laboratory intercomparison in the QA measures.

Downloading template as text file

You could download the template and start to modify the text with your own metadata. Due to limitations of the online portal we could not provide files with the .nas file extension. So please download the text file and edit, and remember to use the .nas file-extension when you create your datafile: pops_air.txt

Validation and submission:

To validate the file, please use the EBAS Submission Tool

Flags commonly used with this format:

All the flags defined for EBAS can be used, and the data submitter is encourage to go through the list of all EBAS flags prior to submitting to ensure that appropriate flagging is done.
Flags are grouped in four categories: V (valid measurement), I (invalid measurement), M (missing measurement) or H (hidden and invalid measurements)..
Apply '000' for valid measurements without any annotations.
The most common flags for these measurements are:

Group 9: Missing flags

999MMissing measurement, unspecified reason

Group 7: Flags used when the value is unknown

781VValue below detection limit, data element contains detection limit

Group 6: Mechanical or instrumental problem

669IMoist or wet filter, invalid
668VMoist or wet filter, valid
666IFilter damaged, invalid
665VFilter damaged, valid
664IInstrument flow(s) too far off target value, considered invalid
663IToo high sampling flow, data considered invalid
662VToo high sampling flow, data considered valid
660VUnspecified sampling anomaly, considered valid

632VLid of polyurethane foam (PUF) sampler not closed
630VPOP concentration from the polyurethane foam (PUF) only

Group 5: Chemical problem

599IUnspecified contamination or local influence
591IAgricultural contamination, considered invalid
568IDust contamination, considered invalid
559VUnspecified contamination or local influence, but considered valid
558VDust contamination, but considered valid
549IImpure chemicals
540ISpectral interference in laboratory analysis
533IFilters mixed up; incorrect analysis
532VData less accurate than normal due to high field blank value
531VLow recovery, analysis inaccurate
530IInvalid due to too low or too high recovery

Group 4: Extreme or inconsistent values

460IContamination suspected

Group 1: Exception flags for accepted, irregular data

147VBelow theoretical detection limit or formal Q/A limit, but a value has been measured and reported and is considered valid

Template for Data Submission:

Clicking on a specific line in the example template will provide a detailed explanation and possible options for each of the metadata elements.

The example template given below contains the metadata fields that are commonly included when reporting data related to this specific template. Some of these metadata elements may not be relevant for your data reporting, like AIRS station ID for stations outside North America or the various QA measure data when there is no QA measure for the data. Such metadata elements could be let out. If you want to include additional metadata elements that are not given in the example template, there is a complete list here. In case of any doubt about such additional metadata, please consult the EBAS team!
