Template for OC/EC - level 2

The present format should be used when submitting organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC) data, measured off-line on aerosol filter samples.

Points to note:

  • Analytical measurement technique:
    The common analytical measurement technique is "thermal-optical_analysis" (charring correction using a laser beam). An alternative method is by adding POC from He (600 sec, 870°C) to OC, which is used in the standard method "SOP=EnCan_Total_900". This method implies using the analytical measurement technique "thermal_analysis" and the charring correction "By adding POC from He 600s, 870°C to OC".
  • Parameters:
    OC, EC, TC, and their calculated uncertainties, subfractions OC1-4 and OCpyr should be reported as separate time series.
  • Artifacts, carbonate carbon:
    If analyzed, carbonate carbon (CC) should be reported as a separate time series, as should positive and negative artifacts. Note that CC could evolve as both OC and EC depending on the temperature program used.
  • OC, EC and TC should be reported as measured, corresponding to the amount detected on the aerosol filter sample. I.e. data should not be corrected for positive and/or negative sampling artifacts or carbonate carbon.
  • Unit:
    The unit is µg C m-3, not µg m-3
  • Uncertainty calculations:
    Calculate the uncertainties of your analyses. This should be done by following the examples provided here (made by Jean-Philippe Putaud).
  • Matrix:
    If you choose as matrix e.g. PM10, PM2.5 or PM1, this must be combined with an appropriate Inlet type, e.g. direct impactor, not e.g. hat or hood, which imply a TSP kind of inlet.
  • Filter face velocity:
    When calculating the filter face velocity, remember to use the exposed area, and not the area of the entire filter.
  • Filter pre-firing:
    Note that temperatures shall be given in Kelvin, also the duration of the pre-firing shall be included.
  • Artifact correction description:
    Describe how your sampling device accounst for sampling artifacts of OC. The following link gives examples on how data users can calculate corrected values for OC.
  • Detection limit:
    LOD can vary for OC, EC and TC, thus include the LOD along with the name of the actual time series.
  • Detection limit description:
    The detection limit is often calculated as 3 times the standard deviation of the fieldblanks. For OC/EC this can be challenging, e.g. because fieldblanks may not be particularly representative for OC, and because they typically do not contain EC. Use this freetext point to describe how the fieldblanks were obtained.
  • QA Measures:
    Information about the inter laboratory comparison (ILC) (i.e. ID, date and document URL), and values for bias and variability to fill in under QA measure, is provided in a separate table in the reports resulting from the ILC on OC/EC. The results from the ILC should be placed along with the name of the actual time series.
  • Boundary and Spike Checks:
    Submitted data will be checked for boundaries, the current specification for boundary checks can be found here.

So please download the text file and edit, and remember to use the .nas file-extension when you create your datafile: EC-OC_offline_lev2.txt

Flags commonly used with this format:

All the flags defined for EBAS can be used, and the data submitter is encourage to go through the list of all EBAS flags prior to submitting to ensure that appropriate flagging is done.
Flags are grouped in four categories: V (valid measurement), I (invalid measurement), M (missing measurement) or H (hidden and invalid measurements)..
Apply '000' for valid measurements without any annotations.

The example template given below contains the metadata fields that are commonly included when reporting data related to this specific template. Some of these metadata elements may not be relevant for your data reporting, like AIRS station ID for stations outside North America or the various QA measure data when there is no QA measure for the data. Such metadata elements could be let out. If you want to include additional metadata elements that are not given in the example template, there is a complete list here. In case of any doubt about such additional metadata, please consult the EBAS team!
