Template for submission of Differential / Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer Data - level 0

Points to note:

  • Reference pressure and temperature for flows:
    A level 0 file contains the data as provided directly by the instrument. Since most Condensation Particle Counters used in DMPs / SMPS systems set their sample flow with a critical orifice, and since it is the volumetric flow which is relevant for calculating the DMA transfer function, the sample and sheath flow rate are referenced to instrument internal temperature and pressure in level 0.
  • Particle Concentration Property Reported in Level 0:
    DMPS / SMPS level 0 files contain the raw particle number concentration measured in a size bin as reported by the condensation particle counter (CPC) in the system, i.e. without applying any inversion and not normalised to any size bin width.
  • Standard deviation of median bin diameter:
    The template contains the columns for the actual median size bin diameter (not the target value, but the one calculated from measured feedback signals of flow sensors and HV supply). The corresponding columns for the particle diameter standard deviation don't contain the size bin width or width of the bin's transfer function, but the standard deviation of consecutive samples of the median size bin diameter over the duration of the set point.

You could download the template and start to modify the text with your own metadata. Due to limitations of the online portal we could not provide files with the .nas file extension. So please download the text file and edit, and remember to use the .nas file-extension when you create your datafile: dmps_lev0.txt

Flags commonly used with this format:

All the flags defined for EBAS can be used, and the data submitter is encourage to go through the list of all EBAS flags prior to submitting to ensure that appropriate flagging is done.
Flags are grouped in four categories: V (valid measurement), I (invalid measurement), M (missing measurement) or H (hidden and invalid measurements)..
Apply '000' for valid measurements without any annotations.
The most common flags for these measurements are:

Group 9: Missing flags

The example template given below contains the metadata fields that are commonly included when reporting data related to this specific template. Some of these metadata elements may not be relevant for your data reporting, like AIRS station ID for stations outside North America or the various QA measure data when there is no QA measure for the data. Such metadata elements could be let out. If you want to include additional metadata elements that are not given in the example template, there is a complete list here. In case of any doubt about such additional metadata, please consult the EBAS team!
